HAVE YOU HEARD OF HYPNOBIRTHING?

Claire Yee is a hypnobirthing teacher and certified Life Coach. She is an expert when it comes to natural techniques for a drug-free, peaceful and comfortable birth.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER HYPNOBIRTHING?

I learnt about Hypnobirthing when I was pregnant with our second baby, Oliver in 2010. My husband and I went along to the classes to learn the techniques and then we put them to use with Oliver’s birth. It was an amazing connected, calm and beautiful experience. The video of his birth inspired parents around the world and now has over a million views on YouTube. Since then I’ve shared these techniques with hundreds of couples.

HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE HYPNOBIRTHING?

Hypnobirthing is a set of tools that support women to follow the lead of their bodies to give birth instinctively. Hypnobirthing teaches relaxation, breathing, massage and fear-release techniques that parents practice in the lead-up to their birth and then on their birthing day. Birth companions play an integral role in supporting women to be in the optimal relaxed state on the day of their birth.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE WHO WAS CONSIDERING HYPNOBIRTHING, BUT ISN’T SURE IF IT’S RIGHT FOR THEM?

Hypnobirthing is for everyone, you don’t have to have a high tolerance to pain to birth comfortably, nor do you have to be closed off to medical support for your birth.

If you are willing to practice simple breathing, relaxation and massage techniques in the lead-up to the day of your baby’s birth it will work for you. These techniques can be applied to your birthing regardless of where you are or how your baby enters the world.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB?

Seeing parents make the shift from feeling anxious about birth at the beginning of the classes to feeling calm and excited about their upcoming birthing day. Also, hearing the amazing birthing stories to follow. Since I teach classes from Birthcare, I often see the parents from my classes when they are staying there after their birth. It is amazing to see them feeling so happy with what they have achieved.

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE TO OFFER SOON-TO-BE PARENTS?

Breathe deeply, relax, and follow the lead of your body and your baby on the day of your birth. Learn about how a woman’s body is naturally designed to give birth and practice techniques to relax on the day of the birthing. Your baby will enjoy the relaxation through your pregnancy and you’ll see the benefits reflected in your baby with their calm nature after they are born.
